My husband, Jim, has the gift of “talking the fire out.” I had never heard of such a thing when we first met, and I doubt I would have believed in it twenty years ago. While dating, I happened to burn my hand, and he offered to speak over the burn to remove the pain. I was astounded! He explained that he’d been given the gift by a woman years before and would not speak the words loud enough for me to hear while blowing on the injury. If I believed in God, Jim said the pain/burn would be gone. Well, I knew I believed in God and His Son, Christ Jesus, but I couldn’t help wondering what would happen it it didn’t work. I knew Jim was a Christian with strong faith. What would he think of me if I didn’t get relief? Well, it did work and we both thanked God for the healing.
When Jim received the gift, he was given the instruction to pass it on only to a female; she, in turn, would only pass it to a male. He was never to tell the words to anyone other than to the person to whom he gifted it. A short time ago, he passed it to a dear lady in our church family. She is truly filled with the Holy Spirit and has adopted us as her parents! We both thought she would be someone who would use this gift to its utmost. So far she has been able to use it on herself twice!
This week I happened to pour scalding hot water on my hand. I was angry with myself and told Jim it would be okay after I ran ice cold mountain water on it. He’d offered to talk the fire out of it, but hard headed me thought the water would be enough! Surprise, surprise! It wasn’t and after about fifteen minutes I asked him to use his gift. Of course, I wondered if I’d waited too long and as he spoke over my burn I thought of Christ and Lazarus. Christ had waited three days when notified Lazarus had died in order to make the miracle of his being brought back to life that much more powerful. After Jim finished, I asked him if he’d blown on it since I hadn’t felt a thing. He said he had. Well, the stinging continued for just a few minutes and THEN IT WAS GONE! Not only was the burning sensation gone, but the redness had disappeared. There is no evidence of a burn at all. Praise God for his healing power!
My experience caused me to search “talking the fire out” on the internet. I had been concerned as my faith strengthened that it came from God. Jim also passed the gift to me a few years ago, and I was relieved to hear words referencing the Trinity. Yes, it was God working the healing. I did find references to those who feel the healing comes as a placebo effect, but that doesn’t explain the lack of blistering! Someone else called it a “spell” but they gave the words and made no mention of our God, Christ, or the Holy Spirit. In a sense, it is similar to a prayer asking for healing. This led me to several scriptures:
1 Corinthians 2:5 That your faith might not rest in the wisdom of men but in the power of God.
Matthew 21:22 And whatever you ask in prayer, you will receive, if you have faith.
Mark 11:22-24 And Jesus answered them, “Have faith in God. Truly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him. Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.
IT ALL BOILS DOWN TO FAITH!!!!!!!
