Genesis 9:16 Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on the earth.

The storm and flooding in South Carolina and along the eastern coast of the United States has drawn the attention of many this past weekend. Some have made reference to Noah and the flood. My mind this morning was drawn to the rainbow. I don’t think it is really a reminder to God of His promise to us as much as it is a reminder to man of the promise. The covenant is termed everlasting and God always remains faithful to His Word. He is never changing; immutable! We are the ones who need to be reminded that whatever God says is the truth. His promises will stand for all eternity.

The devastation caused by this remarkable amount of rainfall will be felt for a long time to come. Watching television on the tenth anniversary of Katrina this year, I saw an elderly lady, who was just finally able to move back into her home. When we experienced our house flooding on August 26th, I thought back to that dear woman and the patience she had exhibited. Imagine waiting ten years to move back home! Her example helped me get through what I viewed as a tragedy. A month later, we are safe and dry back in our home. My heart hurts for those I see faced with a much heavier burden then what Jim and I just experienced. Ours was a bump in the road compared to the loss so many are facing today.

Look to the Lord for comfort, peace, strength, courage and most importantly, hope. No matter how dark it may seem at this moment He will shine His Light on those devastated. He is the answer. Go to Him in prayer and pour out your feelings regarding this disaster. Those who are blessed and safe need to pray for those suffering right now. Those suffering need to pray for guidance and direction as they begin to move forward. The loss may be great, but God will bring a rainbow into our hearts if we look to Him. He’s there always and He doesn’t need to be recharged! We serve a living God and He wants to sustain us through the dark times. Look to the rainbow!
